Roland Eugene Metcalf, age 78 of Coopersville, passed away peacefully Saturday February 9, 2019. Roland graduated from Coopersville High School in 1959 and served in the Marine Corp Reserves from 1961 - 1967. Roland was born October 14, 1940 in Big Rapids MI to Elizabeth (Schmidt) Metcalf and Robert Metcalf. He married Patsy Ann McCormick on November 24, 1962. They raised three children Chris (Margaret) Metcalf, Gary (Terri) Metcalf and Connie (JR) Porter. Roland loved and was devoted to his 7 grandchildren Kasey, Michaylla, Jimmy, Samantha, Katelyn, Angie and Christian and enjoyed attending their sporting events and spending time with them camping. He also loved his brother Duane Metcalf and sister Cheryl Gryka and brother Rob (Michelle) Metcalf and his many cousins, nieces and nephews. Roland was preceded in death by his mother Elizabeth Ladner/Moff, father Robert Metcalf and brother Colin Metcalf. Roland was proud of his time in the U.S. Marine Corp Reserves and enjoyed playing football, basketball and baseball for Coopersville and later watching his children then grandchildren participate in Coopersville athletics. Roland was an avid hunter, fishermen, bowler, golfer, cribbage player and was laid to rest with the perfect cribbage hand. Roland was past President and very active in the Coopersville Lions Club for 47 years, he was a Lions Club District Zone Leader, member of the Coopersville Planning Commission, former leader of Webelos Scout Pack 3004 in Coopersville and coached Coopersville Rocket Football for many years. He enjoyed camping with his family and friends especially Mike & Diane Conley and Mo & Beth Klinger. Roland also enjoyed his toys whether motorcycles, snowmobiles, boats or airplanes. Roland was an accomplished pilot with multi-engine and instrument ratings, Roland enjoyed traveling for bowling tournaments and field trials with most of his travel time in Northern Michigan and the U.P. with family and friends. Roland operated McCormick Machine and Tool, then founded Metcalf Machine Company and later Metcalf Mold Company with his brothers. Visitation will be Thursday February 14 at the United Methodist Church 105 N. 68th Ave Coopersville 49404. 1pm with service at 2pm with refreshments to follow.
