Marvin Corner

Marvin Maynard Corner, age 78 of Coopersville, passed away on Sunday, March 25, 2012. He was born May 2, 1933 in Grand Rapids Township to Charles J. and Carmelita J. (Scheidel) Corner. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Alfred, Ted and James, sisters Virginia Ballard and Elizabeth (Liz) Black and son Andrew Joseph Corner. Marv is survived by his wife Phyllis (Holloway) Corner, his children Robin Younes, Cindy Kavanagh, Laura (Dale) Schultz and Tony Corner, daughter-in-law Jeannie Trisch, his grandchildren Leila, Timothy (Brandy), Tammy (DJ), Wayne (Misty), Tyler, Dilyn, Jordyn, Katie and Danielle, great-grandchildren Devlin, Gage, Anthony, Cody and Emma and several step grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his siblings Doris Warren Schmuker (Jim) Hitsman, Florence Corner, Patricia Foster, Shirley Corner, Beatrice (John) Bron, Ora (Joe) Wright, Alice (Jerry) Kahmann and Lewis (Roberta) Corner, sister-in-laws Florence, Barbara and Ruth Corner, his aunts Elizabeth Corner and Ilah Brown, many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and his former wife, Helen Marie (Robert) Hughes. Marvin grew up on the family farm in Alpine Township, attended Holy Trinity School and graduated from Comstock Park High School in 1952. A Korean era veteran, he joined the U. S. Navy in 1953 and served as an Electriciané�a�a��s Mate until June of 1957. His service took him three quarters of the way around the world, north of the territory of Alaska and to Antarctica on Deep Freeze II on the USS Atka (AGB-3). He served in the U.S. Naval Reserves until his retirement in 1988, having attained the rate of Chief Petty Officer. He was an employee of the City of Grand Rapids for 30 years, serving as an electrician for many of those years and retiring in 1995 as the Utility Maintenance Foreman for the two water lines running from Lake Michigan to Grand Rapids. In retirement he went on mission work teams to Arizona, Mexico, Georgia, Arkansas and Alaska. Marv was a Gold card and life member and Past Commander of American Legion Furniture City Post #258 and a life member and Past President of the Naval Enlisted Reserve Association (NERA) Gerald R. Ford Chapter. He was a member of Life Stream (formerly Allendale Wesleyan) Church where he served his Lord and Savior with a smile. The service to celebrate Marviné�a�a��s life will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, March 31 at Life Stream Church, 6561 Lake Michigan Drive (old middle school), Allendale. Visitation will be held at Throop Funeral Home in Coopersville on Friday, March 30 from 2:00-4:00pm & 7:00-9:00pm and at Life Stream on Saturday one hour prior to the service. Cremation will follow with remains placed in Hooker Cemetery in Allegan County at a later date. In lieu of flowers, consideration of the familyé�a�a��s expenses would be appreciated.
