Larry Michael Schumaker, age 75, peacefully passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2024 surrounded by loved ones .He was born in Grand Rapids, MI to the late Carroll and Edna (Lambers) Schumaker. Larry was a graduate of Coopersville High School & attended Michigan State University before joining the U.S. Marine Corps. He served his country as Lance Corporal and was later promoted to Marine Sergeant while serving with the First Marine Division in Vietnam.
Larry “Dad, Grandpa/Papa Shoe” loved spending time with his daughters, grandchildren, and family whether attending get togethers, supporting grandchildren activities, annual family camping and canoe trips as well as summer visits to Loon Lake. He enjoyed photography, often catching action shots of his daughters or photos of nature. In 1984 The City of Grand Rapids purchased his Festival of the Arts Submission “ Girl and Kite” which was then displayed in the Federal Building. Larry loved playing his guitar. For a short time at MSU he was in a band, ‘The Reason Being’. He loved to listen, play and record music and allowed his daughters to have fun with that process too. His motorcycle was his pride and joy often traveling with others on long distant trips or scenic rides with his girls on beautiful days. Annually he would attend the Blessing of the Bikes in Baldwin, Michigan. Larry was all about traveling. Whether by car, bike or boat he has every map imaginable. Larry enjoyed sports, playing catch with his girls, attending grandchildren sporting events and cheering on the MSU Spartans and the Detroit Lions. He will be best known as a man of few words, but had a deep love for his family and was guaranteed to make you laugh with his priceless remarks and comments.
He is survived by and will be deeply missed by his loving daughters, Lauren (Randy) Greenland, Leslie (Jack) Ostrowski and Lisa (Brian) White; six grandchildren whom he adored, Megan, Katie, Lucas, Hannah, Claire and Ian; talented sisters, Carolyn (Jeff) Johnson, Valerie (Mark) Patterson, Denise (John) Anderson; and finally (a thirteenth birthday gift) brother, Kevin (Niki) Schumaker as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and step-grandchildren Abby, Matt, Max, Alex, Richelle & Audry.
In keeping with his wish, cremation has taken place. Relatives and friends may greet the family 5 to 7 P.M. Monday, March 25, 2024 and 10 to 11 A.M. Tuesday, March 26th one hour prior to the service at the Throop Funeral Home, 214 Church St, Coopersville.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will take place at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, March 26, 2024 at the Throop Funeral Home, 214 Church St, Coopersville with his nephew Fr. Dan Schumaker officiating. The Interment Service will take place at 1:30 P.M. Tuesday at Chapel Hill Cemetery in the Garden of Veterans following the memorial service.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt “Thank You” to his Corewell Health Hospice Nurse, Toya for all the help taking care of him these last several months.
