Schaefer Mr. Herbert (Herb) Carl Schaefer, age 85, went to his heavenly home on Wednesday, June 2, 2010. A quiet and caring man, Herb lived his whole life in the village of Conklin. He was preceded in death by his parents, Valentine and Louise (Peters) Schaefer, his sister, Lela Schaefer, and his grandson, Ken Kelly. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Dorothy, his daughter, Jo (Ray) Kelly, his grandson, Bill Kelly Sr. and his great grandsons Bill Jr. and Ryan Kelly. He was a graduate of Coopersville High School, attended the University of Cincinnati and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering from Tri State University. Herb worked with his father, Valentine, operating Schaefer Building Supply in Conklin, taking over the business after his fatheré�a�a��s death. He became a member of the Conklin Fire Department in 1945 and, through his 65 years on the department, he served as firefighter, Assistant Chief and Chief. He served as the Chester Township Highway Commissioner from 1959 to 1963. He worked for Peter Kiewit in their marine construction division for many years until his retirement. After his retirement, he served for several years on the Ottawa County Building Authority. He also worked for the Township of Chester for many years in the capacity of Assessor and then Deputy Assessor. At his request cremation has taken place with a private family interment service at McNitt Cemetery. Friends may visit the family at the Chester Township Fire Barn, 19560 Conklin St., Conklin, from 2 to 4 on Saturday, June 5.
