Mr Gerald VanderLaan, aged 84, of Coopersville was called home to his Lord Monday July 11, 2011. Gerry was born Sept. 24, 1926 in Grand Rapids MI to Harry and Jeanette (Smith) VanderLaan, who preceded him in death. Gerry was a life long resident of Coopersville, and was very active in Coopersville sports as a player, coach and umpire. He served in the US Navy during WWII, was a member of the Coopersville-Polkton Twp. Fire Dept. for 30 years and managed the dry cleaners and did appliance repair until his retirement. Gerry is survived by his wife of 56 yrs Carolyn; children Valerie, Diane, and Paul VanderLaan; grandchildren Rio, Riley, and Jessica; sister Harriett (Arthur) Miller; brother Carl (Kay) VanderLaan; sister-in-law's Betty Hall, and Sharon (Herb) Reister; bother-in-law Helmer (Hope) Nordwall and many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his sisters Evelyn Benkert, and Lila Huisken, and brothers Charles, Harry and Frank VanderLaan. Funeral Services will be held Friday 11:00 a.m. at the Coopersville United Methodist Church, 105 68th Avenue N., Coopersville, MI 49404. Rev John Morse officiating. Burial will be in the Coopersville-Polkton Twp. Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm at the Throop Funeral Home, 214 Church St, Coopersville.
