Doris Eleanor (McBride) Barkel, formerly of Coopersville, passed away on November 2, 2020. She was born September 4, 1923 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the daughter of Harold and Evelyn Smith McBride. On September 20, 1940 she was married to Henry J Barkel, a marriage that would last over 66 years. After retiring from Meijer, Doris enjoyed a full social calendar. She and Henry were active in the community coordinating senior outings, and getting together with their many friends over card games and dinners. They were also widely traveled, with Alaska and Scotland being among Doris’ favorite destination. The importance of family is best exemplified in the cottage, affectionately known as “The B Hive,” where Doris relished in creating warm memories over cinnamon rolls and enjoying the lake with her family and friends. Often when the family was gathered, Doris and Henry would lovingly say “Look what we started.” Doris was preceded in death by her husband Henry J. Barkel and by her son, Stephen Brian Barkel. She is survived by 3 sons, Barry M Barkel (Audrey), Joel A Barkel (Dawn), Gregory T Barkel (Relinda), a beloved daughter-in-law, Renee Barkel, 13 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her companion and soul-mate of her later years, George Wohlheter. Cremation has taken place. Plans for a Memorial Service are pending. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Coopersville Cares, 180 N. 68th Ave, Coopersville, MI 49404.
