Obituary for L. Roger DeKiep

L. Roger DeKiep, age 81, of Coopersville, passed away Friday, March 21, 2014. Roger was born December 5, 1932 in Muskegon, MI to Henry and Thelma (Clark) DeKiep who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his son, William DeKiep on February 26, 2013. Roger worked as a bulldozer operator and a foreman for the Ottawa County Road Commission for 42 years and built and maintained many roads in Ottawa County. Roger loved sharing his knowledge and love of farm life with his children and grandchildren. He especially enjoyed taking the grandchildren out on 4-wheeler rides to check the cattle in the pastures and for many years he raised and sold Border Collies. Roger liked talking to friends on his Ham radio and could send Morse code at 30 wpm. He enjoyed BMW motorcycles, farm tractors, earth movers, trains, airplanes, and the Wild West (Cowboys and Indians and the Western states). He enjoyed spending time with his Amish friends in the Morley area and watching barn raisings. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Dolores; children, Edward (Mary) DeKiep of Spring Lake and Lori (Bing) Homik of Coopersville; seven grandchildren, Brandt Homik, Justyn Homik, Lauryn Homik, Dawson Homik, Nolyn Homik, Tyler DeKiep and Trevor DeKiep; one brother-in-law, Raymond Young of Spring Lake; two sisters-in-law, Judy Zant of Spring Lake and Phyllis (Dean) Fletcher of Arizona. In keeping with Roger’s wish cremation has taken place and private family services will be held. An online guestbook may be signed at Arrangements handled by Throop Funeral Home in Coopersville.
